The desk’s notes

Dan Patrick seeks a 4th term with $30M+ in cash on hand and Trump's endorsement. D nominee Vikki Goodwin, a state rep from Austin, won the May runoff. Late-July 2026 polling on the race diverged sharply: ReconMR for Texas A&M's Bush School (July 27-30, 619 likely voters) had Goodwin ahead 48-46, while a Texas Southern University poll fielded the same window (1,200 likely voters) had Patrick ahead 46-39.

Both polls found most voters still don't know enough about Goodwin to rate her. The structural R lean of Texas statewide races makes this safe-R barring a major environment shift.
